  • The approaches of Russian and Soviet historians of the 19th – early 21th century to the Black Sea Straits issue, one of the most critical problems of international relations is considered in the article. This article distils and disaggregates the evolution of Russian and Soviet historiography of tsarist Russia foreign policy concerning the “Eastern Question” and the Constantinople, the Bosporus and the Dardanelles issue. The particular attention is paid to the analysis of the perception of Russian historians of the Great Powers struggle for the Straits as one of the important reasons of the First World War. The debates as well as the various points of view of major historical trends considering this topic are analyzed. The influence of the political situation on historical research, both in the period of the Russian autocracy, the Soviet Union and in modern Russia is examined.
